Week 7 Predictions

25 Missouri vs 7 Georgia:

0ap2000000247915This game intrigues me a lot.  Georgia has lost both of their star running backs, all but one of their starting wide receivers, and to top it all their punter is hurt.  On the other side Missouri is the only undefeated team in the SEC besides Alabama.  Last year was the “welcome to the SEC” year for the Tigers who had a horrific year.  The leader of this Mizzou team is senior quarterback James Franklin.  The Tigers just broke the top 25 last week and this would be a win they need to show that they can be a contender in the big bad SEC.  I think that the Tigers will shock Uga and the Bulldogs between the hedges.  Prediction: Missouri 31 Georgia 30

texas-oklahoma-red-river-rivalry-gold-jerseys-550x38912 Oklahoma vs Texas:

The Red River Rivalry has always been a huge game, but the last three years Oklahoma has scored 70 points and destroyed the Longhorns.  This game is the future of Mac Brown.  These Longhorn seniors have never beaten OU and that is a terrible feeling.  One of the things the Sooners had last year that they do not have now is Landry Jones.  I believe that the Texas Longhorns will shock the world and save Mac Brown’s job.  “Don’t Mess With Texas”  Prediction: Oklahoma 20 Texas 28

17 Florida vs 10 LSU:lsu-nike-pro-combat-uniforms

The nasty Florida defense is going against one of the best offenses in the nation.  The Tigers have the best wide receiving core and they are going up against the very best corners in football.  This game is going to be a lot higher scoring then you think it would be.  The Tigers are in Death Valley and they will find holes in the Gators stingy defense. Prediction: Florida 23 LSU 28

130928.mca_.ODE_.fbc_.Cal_.132-980x6532 Oregon vs 16 Washington:

For the past five years the Ducks have beaten their rivals by an average of 23 points.  This year though the Huskies are no flukes.  Last week they got robbed.  They should have beaten Stanford in the Farm.  Washington has the number 1 total defense in the country but they are facing the fastest and best offense in the history of college football.  Gameday is in Seattle and their brand new stadium is going to be rocking.  Washington is back and they are better then ever.  Keith Price is the game changer for them.  In his whole career at UW he has never defeated the ducks, but few teams have.  Price had a huge game in the Farm and he put his Huskies in a chance to upset the Cardinal but the refs stole that chance away from them.  This morning Duck’s explosive playmaker De’anthony Thomas was cleared to play after suffering an ankle injury 2 weeks ago vs Cal.  This is huge for the Ducks because it takes the load off their Heismen front runner quarterback Marcus Mariota.  I can finally say that I believe in the Huskies.  I know that Washington football is back.  This is their year and they are going to beat their rival, but not this rival.  I think that Oregon will roll Washington.  Prediction: Oregon 56 Washington 17

How To Roll Back the Tide

For the past couple years Alabama has been the king of college football.  Nick Saban is imagesthe best coach and every year they get new superstars.  Some people think Bama is unstoppable.  This is false.  The last two years that they have won the National Championship they have lost a game each year.  The key to shredding the suffocating Tide defense is if you have a mobile quarterback.  In 2011 they lost to LSU who had Jordan Jefferson at QB.  In 2012 they lost to the Texas A&M Aggies who of course have Johnny Hotshot.  Even Michigan with Denard Robinson scored a lot of points on them.

ole-miss-footballThe truth is Saban and his trees are not perfect, in fact, they are far from it.  I think that the reigning champs will make it to the National Title, but they will have one loss.  Last year one of the only teams they struggled with was the Ole Miss Rebels.  This year they had the best recruiting class in the country, and they have a dime at half back.  I predict the Tide will slip up against the young guns of Mississippi.  This is a bold statement but Ole Miss has had some impressive wins against Vanderbilt and Texas.  Although anyone could smash their way through the disgrace of a Texas defense, they are still the Longhorns.

It is highly unlikely that this upset would take place but I have my reasons.  I predicted that Unknowneven with a loss Bama will make the BCS National Championship. I also believe they will loose that game.  Yes the SEC reign of terror will end.  The team that will ruin the Tide’s dream of a three peat is the Oregon Ducks.  Right now I think they are hands down the best team in the nation.  You need a running QB to beat Bama and the Ducks have Marcus Mariota.  Mariota can fly but he has a cannon of an arm to expose Saban’s weak secondary.  The tempo of the Ducks would effect Alabama also.  They are the fastest offense in the nation and Bama’s big boys up front will be gassed after the first quarter.

High School Game of the Week

This week the IL high school Comcast game of the week  is Joliet Catholic vs Nazareth Academy.  Two years ago Nazareth beat JCA and last year JCA pulled out a victory in overtime by stopping a two point conversion. This year both offenses run the ball well but I think Naz has the advantage in the passing game with senior QB Jake Bartels leading the offense.  Although JCA’s offense led by QB Nick Morrison racked up over 500 yards in each of their first two games they will have a much tougher time against the Naz defense.

Last week Naz’s defense was challenged by Marist’s no huddle offense in a game that went down to the wire.  Nazareth’s defense, led by seniors Robbie Brindley and Jack Dolan has a better match up this week against JCA.  Brindley leads the team in tackles and Dolan has had a team high of interceptions, one in every game so far this year. The roadrunners will be up against a strong JCA offensive line which includes senior J.B. Butler who plays on both sides of the ball. They’re big and fast.

Any way you look at this it’s going to be a great game. I think the difference will come down to Naz’s depth at running back and strong D against the run.

Strong Start For Buffalo

The NFL preseason has just began. After the first week of football I was most impressed by the Buffalo Bills in their blow out win against the Colts. New QB EJ Manuel was a little shaky in his first couple drives, but that was just nerves. What impressed me the most was EJ’s 2 minute touchdown drive to end the first half. He showed a lot of maturity and poise. He sat in the pocket and delivered the ball perfectly. Also another rookie, Marquis Goodwin, was phenomenal.  He almost took his first kick return back for a touchdown and he did bring his second one back all the way. I am very excited about this year. This is the year, I believe, the Bills will end their postseason drought and make the playoffs.

Preseason ESCC Conference Player of the Year Candidates

Chris James, RB, Notre Dame:

James is probably the biggest name in the toughest conference in Illinois and he is also the favorite to win this award. James is a small back at 5 foot 9 but he can sure put on the wheels and race to the end zone. This speedy back lights up recruiters eyes. He already FBLmarca-MGC-091412-p8.jpghas offers from Arizona State, Georgia Tech, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northern Illinois, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Tennessee, Toledo, Western Michigan, and Wisconsin. He is not all speed, Chris James is 202 lbs of pure muscle. He has the jets to turn on and he can power through almost any defender, “almost”. The only down game he had was against Nazareth Academy lockdown defense and their hard hitting defensive back Robbie Brindley. Brindley is what you would call James’ kryptonite or pretty close to it. I think Chris James and his Notre Dame Dons are going to have a good year, but they should circle the day when they play Nazareth on the Roadrunners Homecoming on their calendar because that is going  to be a game for the ages.

Nic Weishar, WR, Marist:

nic weishar-1Weishar is a whopping 6-5 and 225 lbs. This tower of a receiver committed to Notre Dame but also got offers from  Arkansas, Boston College, Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, NorthCarolina State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Purdue, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, and Wisconsin. Weishar has the height to catch over any defender and is like a recking ball when he is running to the end zone. Weishar and the Marist Redhawks had a fantastic regular season but couldn’t live up to the hype in the playoffs by getting upset in the first  round by Lyons Township also known as L.T. This team and their star player both choked in the big spotlight and I think the same thing could happen again this year.

Will Colmery, DE, Nazareth: 1385444_a535bbe131e143038aa4666f0774703e

Will Colmery is one of the stars on the stingy Roadrunners defense. He will be on the first team conference and is probably the best defensive linemen in the conference. At 6’5”, 248 lbs.  Colmery is a hard hitter and he can blow past any offensive linemen. He is a quarterback’s nightmare. He is the ideal pass rusher. Colmery currently has offers from Central Michigan, Colgate, Fordham and North Dakota.  If you’re up against Colmery this season, you better be worried.

Robbie Brindley, CB/WR, Nazareth:

72309977Listed by Edgy Tim as a player to watch, Robbie Brindley earned All Area Honorable Mention last year as a junior CB.  He had his best game against the two best players in the conference. His breakout game was against Joliet Catholic, where he knocked down the number one running back in the nation who is now on USC, Ty Isaac. He didn’t just take him down once,  he took him down over and over again. His second best game was against Notre Dame, where he and his team let Chris James do absolutely nothing. Tackle after tackle, he was a machine. Going into the second half of play both teams completely changed their offensive game plan due to Brindley’s dominance on the outside. He was number 36 last year but if you want to spot him this year he will be wearing number 7. His play reminds me of all Pac-12 conference corner back for the Oregon Ducks Ifo Ekpre-Olomu. They both can hit extremely hard and they are ball hawks. This year Brindley will be playing on both sides of the ball adding another weapon for QB Jake Bartels.  Brindley is only 5’8” but is all muscle and is one of the fastest players on the team.  I think Robbie Brindley is going to have an even better year then last year. He is one of the reasons I think the Roadrunners have a chance to win the conference title.

Flynn Nagel, WR, Marist:

Flynn Nagel is the other superstar in the receiving squad for the Marist Red Hawks. Nagel is 6’0” and 180lbs. He can beat any defender on his first step, and then he is gone down the field for a long bomb deep ball touchdown. The play that kills defenses the most is the bubble screen. Just throw a short little screen pass to Nagel and next thing you know he is gone for an 80 yard touchdown. The key to this play is the quick foot work by Nagel, his 6a613eec4ebec7381fd9c338d7b9487fjuke move could even brake all star pro CB Richard Sherman’s ankles. Nagel has the footwork of a ballerina but trust me he is no wimp. He can shed tackle after tackle trucking over defenders. His play reminds me of Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson, they are both just explosive playmakers. Nagel has an offer from Illinois and he has gotten looks from Florida State, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Notre Dame, and Stanford. This great athlete is the perfect Robin for Nic Weishar who is his Batman. Flynn Nagel’s talent gets over shadowed by Nic Weishar but he can sure play ball.

Jack Beneventi, QB, Benet:

Jack Beneventi was one of the reasons Benet Academy had one of the best seasons in school history last year. He started as a Sophomore and played like he was a last year Senior captain.  If you could dream up the perfect pocket passer he is what it would look like. Beneventi is 6-6 and he is 185 lbs. He has great eyes and can see the whole field.  He has a gun slinger mentality and has a one of the biggest arms in the conference. dt.common.streams.StreamServer.clsHis accuracy is dead on and his game goes up in clutch moments. Beneventi can move around in the pocket and avoid defenders but one thing he is not the greatest at is throwing on the run. This is a weakness that he needs to improve on. He can be mobile but he is also smart and knows when to slide. That is big because he has to avoid injury, because if he goes down so does the Benet season. Next year I think will be his best but this year he will also shine. This young QB is taking the conference by storm. Last season he passed for 2,322 yards and threw 20 touchdowns. The sky is the limit is for Jack Beneventi.

This is is going to be really exciting and I can’t wait for it all to begin.  Look for me on the sidelines and bleachers.  Hope to see you there too!

Summer League Stand Out

The NBA Summer League has arrived, and all the young talents show their skills to try to Tim Hardaway, Jr. Press Conferencemake it to the next level of the NBA. After the first day there were some studs and some duds. The one player that really stood out for me was Knicks rookie swingman Tim Hardaway Jr.  Hardaway is the son of former Heat legend Tim Hardaway senior and by the way he is playing little Timmy might be more successful than his old man. In his first NBA appearance in the SL, he wrapped up with 13 points giving  Spike Lee something to cheer about. The Knicks future is bright with the back court of Iman Shumpert and Hardaway. The both played outstanding together and they have already bonded and formed a tight friendship. In the future Tim Hardaway Jr. will be a huge star. What do you think?

Hometown Celebration by Jack Brindley, Guest Blogger

photoWhen a hometown team wins any kind of major game or championship, there is bound to be a grand celebration waiting for them when they return home.  And with the Chicago Blackhawks recent Stanley Cup victory still ringing in the streets of Chi-Town, the celebration seems to have just begun.  All the excitement started as soon as the last goal was scored.  Soon after that final horn rang in Boston, the streets of Chicagoland exploded with the sounds of Chelsea Dagger and the occasional “Detroit Sucks”.  I myself am not a Hawks fan, but I had to leave my Buffalo Sabres just for a little while so I could jump on the Chicago bandwagon.  All I could do was watch abc 7 local news and see the festivities unravel from a helicopter view. Blackhawks_Parade

Things had only just begun in the Windy City for the Hawks and probably the biggest surprise was waiting for them the following Friday.  That surprise was the celebratory parade honoring their recent championship held in Chicago.  It has to be one of the biggest celebrations for any team I’ve seen in a while.  Miami, you can eat your heart out, this is how a city celebrates a championship.  Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to enjoy the parade myself.  I have seen the pictures though and that’s good enough for me hearing from my friends about how chaotic and great it was.

photoOn the contrary, I did have the amazing opportunity to see Coach Quenneville and his friend Stanley make an appearance at the Hinsdale Fourth of July parade.  Coach Quenneville had the honors of being this year’s grand marshall.  As he drove down Garfield street, he hoisted up the Cup so everyone could see that the celebration is still going strong.  Go Hawks….for now, and next year GO SABRES!

Sixers Lose Star

The NBA draft recently occurred and the Philadelphia Seventy Sixers made a lot of bad bad decisions draft night. The biggest was trading away young star point Jrue Holiday for draft pick and in my opinion, total bust, Nerlens Noel. Noel is shorter and skinnier than superstar small forward Kevin Durant, and Noel is a center. The worse part about this trade was that the Sixers lost Jrue Holiday. Holiday is very young and he is on the rise. Last year Holiday debuted in his first All-Star game, he was the only Sixer who was honored to be on the roster. The Sixers made a horrible trade, what they should of done is build their program around Jrue not send him to New Orleans. What they did was set the Pelicans up for success, and send their own team into a rebuilding mode.   What do you think?

NBA Game 5 Prediction

Miami’s Keys: dwyane-wade-of-the-miami-heat[1]

The key for the Heat is the production of the Big Three….LeBron, Wade, and Bosh.  In game four they played outstanding, but the rest of the team had a bad game. If the big three don’t bring their “A” game and the role players do not preform the Heat could be in some big trouble. Wade looks like the Dwayne Wade we all know and love. I am looking for him to play big.

628x471San Antonio’s Keys:

The Spurs need to avoid injury. Tony Parker has a torn hamstring and it is vital that they do not loose him. I believe Kawhi Leonard needs to step up and take the scoring load off Parker.  Leonard is the best defensive player on their team and he is the future of the Spurs. In the games they have won he has shut down LeBron. I think Leonard will play great and the San Antonio Spurs will win their last home game of the year and go up 3-2 in the NBA finals.

Preseason College Football Predictions 6-11

6.  Louisville Cardinals: teddy-bridgewater-p1

The Louisville Cardinals are coming of last year’s Sugar Bowl champion year, with a lot of confidence. They are returning a Heisman Trophy favorite quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and they have Charlie Strong a terrific coach. There is a lot of buzz going around this program and they have a very easy schedule. I believe that the Cards are going to have a undefeated season, now let’s just see if they live up to the hype.

stanford_hogan_11720127.  Stanford Cardinals:

The Cardinals are always a contender, and with quarterback Kevin Hogan coming back they will be hard to stop. Winning the Rose Bowl was a big accomplishment for them last year, but this year they have even bigger expectations. This team is well coached and is balanced on both sides of the ball, the only problem is they have to compete with the high flying flashing Oregon Ducks. Stanford has a suffocating defense, but it is not enough to slow down the Ducks.

8.  Michigan Wolverines:  rn_i_devingardner_ms_600

The Wolverines are coming of a decent season, but this is Michigan and the expectations are huge. Now with Devin Gardner at QB they can finally run their offense. The Wolverines big three are quite good. They have the exact replica of Cam Newton in Devin Gardner, Fitzgerald Toussaint, and a deep threat receiver Jeremy Gallon. This team is solid, and they are my pick to win the B1G Ten. GO BLUE!

9.  Clemson Tigers: tajhboydauburnvclemsong6k95yefiedl

The Tigers are a fast dangerous offense. It is big that Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins are returning. This is a good team with a lot of talent coming back. Look for Clemson to have a big year.

Miami_Georgia_Tech_Football__pmpfeifer@naplesnews.com_3_t60710.  Miami Hurricanes:

Miami is now relieved of their punishments and it’s their time to shine. They have a cool and collect quarterback in Stephen Morris and they have a lethal running back in Duke Johnson. They went 7-5 last year, but they are looking to improve that. With the gunslinging mentality of Morris, and the explosiveness of Johnson, they are destined to have a great season.  It looks like this year its all about the U.

11.  Northwestern Wildcats: Venric Mark

The Wildcats finally ended their Bowl Game win drought last year. Pat Fitzgerald has truly turned this mess of a program around. Having duel threat quarterback Kain Colter and explosive returner/running back Venric Mark coming back for this year is great. This program is on the rise and they are the biggest thing to come in Evanston.
